This learning event is right for you if you are reviewing your pedagogical approach in the middle years of schooling (Years 5 to 9 particularly) and keen to connect with a network of like-minded educators.
Research in many countries, including Australia and New Zealand report concerning levels of disengagement with learning in the middle years of schooling. This has a significant effect on behaviour management, student and staff wellbeing as well as academic achievement of students. This workshop provides design thinking strategies for teachers to engage with ideas that are challenging and relevant to their students whilst also meeting the requirements of the Australian or Victorian Curriculum. The workshop explores the importance and logistics of transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary learning as well as tools to track and assess students' learning. The workshop considers strategies to reshape the middle years by developing student agency, action and self-efficacy through involvement in all facets of learning from planning to assessment.

David Burton is a Principal Consultant and member of the School Improvement Team at ISV.David has a background in teacher coaching and professional learning, curriculum development, middle years innovation and the integration of new learning technologies into the classroom. David has particular expertise with the International Baccalaureate programs. He was the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) Coordinator at the International School of Paris and the Australian International School in Singapore. He has also led middle years initiatives for the Victorian Department of Education. As a regular conference presenter and workshop leader over the last ten years, David has led professional learning with schools and teachers across Australia and New Zealand as well as throughout Asia, Europe and Africa on a variety of areas including IB program leadership, curriculum planning and development, authentic assessment and service learning.
