This learning event is right for you if you are a mathematics teacher who wants to learn to assist a student with dyslexia.

Description                                       

This webinar will focus on the language-based difficulties that students struggling with reading and writing can experience in mathematics. Participants will be introduced to a number of strategies that support decoding, encoding, vocabulary development and comprehension. They will be given the opportunity to work collaboratively to develop an operations vocabulary sheet, a topic glossary, a revision mind-map and a dyslexia-friendly mathematicss worksheet.

Schools are required to make reasonable adjustments to meet the needs of students with disability and this includes dyslexia.

This learning event supports creating best practice toward meeting the following VRQA standard(s):

• Curriculum and Student Learning – Student learning outcomes
• The minimum standards for schools offering a senior secondary course – Student learning outcomes.

Presenter information

Shirley Houston               

Shirley Houston is an educational consultant with over 35 years of teaching experience and a Masters degree in Special Education. She is a long-standing Board member of The Dyslexia-SPELD Foundation of Western Australia. Shirley has established a reputation as a caring, dynamic and innovative educator whose programs reflect both current research and a deep understanding of the needs of students with learning difficulties and disabilities. She has taught students in Years K-12 at government, Catholic and Independent schools, in Australia and in America.

Elspeth Adamson

Elspeth Adamson is currently Manager, Student Services at Independent Schools Victoria, where she works in the areas of students with individual needs and student wellbeing, as well as addressing parent concerns about their children’s education. Previously, she was a Head of Campus and Deputy Principal of a Victorian multi-campus Independent school, and a Principal of an international school in India.
