Description
The ChildSafe Level 1 – Team Member Training is an introductory course designed for teachers, support staff, and other school personnel working in an independent school environment. The course builds foundational knowledge of child safety and the responsibilities that all staff share in protecting the wellbeing of students. Participants are introduced to the Child Safe Standards, the importance of student voice and participation, recognising signs of abuse or neglect, and appropriate responses to concerns or disclosures. The training also explores practical tools such as codes of conduct, reporting processes and everyday practices that help create a school culture where students feel safe, respected and supported.
Key takeaways
- Understand the purpose and key principles of the Child Safe Standards and their application in an independent school setting.
- Recognise the role that all school staff play in creating and maintaining a child-safe culture.
- Identify signs and indicators of different forms of abuse, neglect and grooming.
- Respond appropriately when a student discloses harm or when a concern about safety arises.
- Understand reporting obligations and internal school processes for raising child safety concerns.
- Apply practical strategies that empower students, support inclusion and strengthen student voice in school environments.
- Understand the role of codes of conduct, policies and team practices in maintaining safe boundaries and protecting students.
Participants who successfully complete the program will be awarded a ChildSafe Certificate of Completion (in partnership with Independent Schools Victoria), recognising their engagement in professional learning relevant to their role in supporting child safety and wellbeing in a school setting.
