Description

What does a culturally competent teaching workforce look like for schools? What does a teacher or school leader need to be culturally competent? What does cultural safety look like in schools?

What might some of the challenges or barriers we face in developing a culturally competent teaching workforce?

ISV’s program on reconciliation and Indigenous cultural competency will commence with a webinar to deepen understanding and explore:

  • Policy development, including Reconciliation Action Plans
  • Curriculum design (especially incorporating either the Victorian Curriculum or Australian Curriculum Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority)
  • Guidance on Senior pathways for Aboriginal students
  • Student wellbeing support for Aboriginal students

The session will also be used to as identify Member needs, with schools having the option to engage in a tailored and differentiated program as a follow-up.

The program will complement the AITSL focus on Indigenous Cultural Competence in the Australian Teaching Workforce and coincide with National Reconciliation Week.

The presenter AJ Williams-Tchen has also delivered over 700 cultural appreciation workshops to over 200 Victorian community, health and hospital settings, training non-Indigenous people about culture and working with individuals, families and communities. He has won and been nominated for numerous state and national awards in both the education and health sectors.

AJ Williams-Tchen          

AJ Williams-Tchen (Wiradjuri / Wotjobaluk), has delivered over 700 cultural appreciation workshops across Australia, in community, health and schools. Training non-Indigenous people about culture and working with individuals, families and communities. AJ facilitates cultural mentoring programs in a number of Independent schools for Indigenous students and works with schools to develop culturally safe environments for all students and staff. AJ has supported several schools and organisations with the development of their Reconciliation Action Plans as well as Museum Victoria’s First Indigenous Employment and Career Development Strategy.
